Time to reflect.
Time to reflect.
Less than one year ago we started the No Small Thing Fund. It was a bit leap of faith and a lot of blind ambition.
We wanted to do something to help kids get a good start in life. And what better way then to get them outdoors?
The outdoors is nature’s classroom - a calming influence in the distractions of an online world - and a place to connect and cooperate with others. It’s been that way for us and we had faith we could help make it happen for others.
And so, we signed some forms, put some money in and got to work.
Here’s what happened.
A path forward

From the start we knew more about what we didn’t want to happen than what might happen. What we didn’t want was a lot of paper-work, waiting for approvals and a long delay waiting to have results. Instead, No Small Thing was created as a foundation hosted by the Central Okanagan Foundation.
Within six months our first donations to support local nonprofits went out. These contributions meant that 13 local youth are enrolled in outdoor programs. Amazing!
What had only been a dream a year ago was already making a difference.
And we’re only getting started.
Our Fall campaign will fund seven more youth and will reach our goal this year of 20 youth fully sponsored in programs.
What next
In May of this year we had the opportunity to tell our story at the Association of Fundraising Professionals conference held at UBC Okanagan. We had lots of positive feedback and it inspired us to share our story at other venues.
This October I (Hugh) will be presenting at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival. And No Small Thing will be highlighted in the Central Okanagan Foundation annual report.
